Over the past eighteen years, Golden Valley students have contributed to making countless numbers of art pieces. One of the most monumental art pieces is the hand carved wooden sign Mrs. Keyser-Petty made with the first graduating K-8 class of Golden Valley. The sign was meticulously created and finished in 2008.
After carving the name of the school and logo in this solid block of wood, the students carefully etched their signature by hand. This piece of art and gift to the school was the last project the first graduating K-8th grade students created together. This sign represents a solid foundation for Golden Valley and a long bond of friendship.
The finished sign was placed in front of the student drop off loop of the Palisades campus (now known as Golden Valley River School). Some volunteer parents ensured the resilience of the sign and dug several feet into the ground and poured concrete around the metal poles which held the sign in place. Mrs. Keyser-Petty has ensured that year after year the sign was re-sealed to preserve its quality.
In 2015, Golden Valley became a Charter Management Organization (CMO) and now has two schools; Golden Valley River School and Golden Valley Orchard School. There arose a need for new school signs for each school. After eight years of standing tall, this heirloom sign needed to find a new home.
We were fortunate to have a parent volunteer unearth this sign and assist in moving it to the River School Garden. Farmer Matt, the gardening teacher, has created a space for this sign and has offered to continue re-sealing and preserving the sign for all in the Golden Valley community to see and for returning alumni to visit.
Over the past eight years, this sign has served as a marker to the successfulness of our school communities and is currently archived in the River School garden. Come and give the sign a visit and walk around to the back of the sign to see all of signatures that took place in the process of making it. One of these students currently works in the Eagle’s Nest After School program over at the River School.
